Connecting alternative Router

I am useing a cabled router supplied by Swisscom. I have been given a Swisscom Netopia 7357 wifi router which I would like to use. However I cannot get connectivity to the telephone line, the green DSL light keeps flashing.

Cabling OK, have rebooted etc.

Does Swisscom block me from useing another router ?

I've never heard that Swisscom blocked a connection because of another router…

Do you have an ISDN connection (Multiline)? Because the Netopia 7357 is only for ISDN!

If no, you don’t have the right router.

If yes, did you try to do a reset of the router with the reset button at the back? You should press in the reset 15 seconds with a sharp object.

Maybe the best would be to call the technical service at 0800 800 800.

Tks for your reply.

Have since contacted Swisscom and they confirmed that this router is only for ISDN line and as I am on an Economy Line, it will not work.( But of course I could buy a router from them for Fr. 249.-  or make a new contract at Fr. 149.-) I did reboot router etc. - no go.

I am mad about this, in England where I come from, any up to date router will work!

I have several other routers, D-Link, Zyxel, Talktalk (from UK). Non will work, won't connect to line, DSL light will not stop flashing. Anyhow thanks for your help.

 I'm just a customer, but my experience is that Swisscom uses a directory service such as ActiveDirectory to manage the customer Routers. If your swissco router goes bad, the tech can drop in a new one and it's automatically enabled, same router admin logins.

If you put a store bought unit direct to your internet connection, the swisscom service will not be able to negotiate the line. Use the swisscom supplied router in front, put your box directly behind to connect to your PCs

Thanks for your reply in response to my query. I have since then had the same suggestion from a friend, set it up and it works fine. The way Swisscom prevents the use of alternative routers is unheard of in the UK, tey are exploiting their near monopoly position.

Hi Lecoucou,

from my expearnce, swisscom don't prevent other VDSL routers from connecting, in the UK, they run a ADSL/2 network, BT have some VDSL deployments, TalkTalk ADSL, the router that you may have been trying could be an older ADSL technology that can not work.

If you pickup any VDSL2 based modem it will work, like my self I run an AVR

Don't they make it difficult for us with al the different specs for routers and requirements for internet access.

Have taken on board your remarks, but don't know what an AVR is. Please explain. Many thanks.
